German Lab Makes Strongest Magnetic Field Ever

Magnetic FieldCall it another victory for German design. Researchers in Dresden have set a new world record for the strongest magnetic field ever manufactured at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory Dresden (HZDR). Using a two-layer, 440-pound copper coil the size of a water bucket, they managed to coax 91.4 teslas from their creation for just a few milliseconds, surpassing the previous record of 89 teslas. Scientists Show Heart Can Repair Itself

Heart OrganScientist in Britain have been able to transform a type of stem-like cell in mouse hearts into functioning heart muscle. This research is proving that the heart has dormant repair cells that can be reactivated. The research has yet to be translated into humans yet, and is very early in development, but the result could suggest a drug that could prime hearts damaged by cardiac arrest into repairing themselves. Soon-to-be-Forgotten Technologies

technologyIt’s hard to believe how much technology has changed in the last 15-20 years since my children were born.

If they were born today, there are technologies and processes that they would never know. For example, they would probably never flip through a big heavy phone book, play a CD, go to a movie rental store, use a paper map, or load a roll of film into a camera. These are a few of the many things that are becoming extinct this decade, according to MoneyTalks News.

Buzz Worthy New Gadgets

The annual CES (Consumer Electronics Association) show always has some noteworthy innovations. This year over 20,000 new products were showcased. CNN listed their top 10 most “buzz worthy.” My favorite is #9, the new tool called iHealth. It lets you use your iPhone to track your blood pressure using a separately purchased blood pressure band. Since heart disease is so common and people are taking more precautions about their health, I can see this product being very successful.

Also interesting is the Smart fridge, #5. Maybe one day I’ll be using my refrigerator to send a tweet!

Riding the rickshaws in Mumbai

The Gateway of India is in MumbaiWith summer officially upon us, many Americans are probably considering cashing in their vacation times. While some may think of Florida or California as attractive vacation destinations, my first choice is always my home country of India.

It’s often said that those who know India consider it paradise and those that don’t think it’s a surprise. One such specific area is Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra.

As Gather.com notes, Mumbai is home to more than 16 million people, making it the most populous city in India and the second most in the world. With that many people, it’s hard to catch a dull moment, making it the perfect spot for a one-week getaway.

One of the best ways to get around the city is via the rickshaw. The three-wheeled motorcycles have become almost symbolic of the city, making it less of a mere transportation device and more of a must-do activity in itself. On the back of a rickshaw, one can see everything from the majestic Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the Marine Drive.

Mumbai is only one city in India where rickshaws may come in handy. Trip Advisor recently nominated Udaipur as the No. 1 sightseeing destination in India.ADNFCR-3297-ID-19864962-ADNFCR
